“Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.”

by nuch

Good Lord Boyet, my beauty, though but mean,
Needs not the painted flourish of your praise:
Beauty is bought by judgement of the eye,
Not utter’d by base sale of chapmen’s tongues

Shakespeare : Love’s Labours Lost, 1588

What is beauty?
I once asked my professor this question when I was studying Industrial Design.  Later, it comes to the question of “What is Art?”.  Then I’ve learned another word, “Aesthetic“.  It’s so funny that I can understand “Aesthetic” pretty well, but still not quite understand “Art” and “Beauty“.

My opinion is :
Beauty” is the surface, but “Aesthetic” is the depth. “Art” is the overall combining “Beauty” and “Aesthetic” together.

Men might be attracted by the “Beauty” of women.  However, a woman like me isn’t impressed by the “Beauty” of men.  I love to see the “Aesthetic” of them instead, and I don’t want them to come and talk to me because of the “Beauty“.

Unfortunately, this world is full of “surface” relationship….  I’m so tired of breaking the ice, climbing the wall and opening one’s mind.  I don’t want to be “Shallow Hal“, but I’m not sure if I’m strong enough to stand at the same point….

I suppost to comment in english, right?

To be honest, yes, we men are attracted by the “Beauty” of women, and even if I have “Aesthetic”,I think I lost almost of it when I am attacted, funny eh?

I think it hard to find men who approach women with his full “Aesthetic” when they start their relationship, and it take quite sometime (may be long long time) for us to get that sense back and make a better move in relationship.

Tell you the truth..even my wife and I start out like that too..he he. I was very very “shallow” and I feel funny everytime I think about it.

    (เอ่ Aesthetic ในที่นี้นี่หมายถึง สุนทรียภาพ ใช่ไม๊นะ)

Yes.. the definition of Aesthetic in Thai is สุนทรียภาพ.

I sometimes get attracted by the “Beauty” as well, but I try not to be misinterpreted the “Aesthetic” by the “Beauty”. Some of my friends said I’m so idealistic. It’s true at some point.
Many people start relationship because of “Beauty”. It’s ok in the beginning, however, they judge the “Aethetic” by the “Beauty“. They are influenced by the “Stereotype” or the “Halo effects“. If they open their eyes, and see that not eveyone follow the same path, the world might be prettier and more understandable.
